Narrative Still Life

Original Photo (Colour + Vignette)

Photo Edit #1 (Black & White + Vignette)

Photo Edit #2 (Duotone + Vignette)

Questions:
1. Each one of these objects represents a part of my life, and together they represent me as a whole. I put the three hats in this image because I wear a hat everyday. They're a big part of who I am. The two A's hats represent my love for baseball and the Oakland A's. The other hat is a wrestling hat, which represents my love for WWE. The journal, pen, and pencils next to the hats represents my poetry writing and how I love to just write in general no matter where I am. I wear Converse everyday, so I put my favourite pair in the center of the image. I put a stack of books on the other side of the image because I really love to read, and I have for my entire life. I picked books from different moments in my life, and as you go up the stack, you kind of see how my reading style changed and how my taste in novels has changed throughout my life. I hung headphones over the books because I love music and I listen to it often. I love how a pair of headphones can create a sense of escape from whatever else is going on. I added a black rose to the center of the image because I like roses and they're one of my favourite things to photograph. Finally, I centered everything on and around a skateboard because I've been riding a skateboard for a few years and I just really like that I can go wherever I want on it.
2. I think the best aspect of my image is the way it can tell a person a lot about me without even knowing or talking to me. I like the composition best and how each item balances another item to create a pleasing image to the eye.
3. I used space in this image by positioning objects in a way to create depths to the entire photographs, placing the shoes and journal in the foreground, and having everything else in the background. I also used a lot of different colours to create a visually appealing image. I used a lot of blues, yellows, and reds in this image. I also used balance in this image by creating a stack of books on one side and a stack of hats on the other side, so that the image would look balanced.
4. I think I could improve on the placement of some of the objects to create a more interesting composition. I could have also used a different background to better focus on the objects in the composition.
5. I don't think I would choose the same objects in ten years because I'm constantly changing, however, I think some of the objects could be the same. I hope to still be writing in ten years because it's a nice release from the world. Along with writing, I hope I'm still reading because I think it helps to read because novels have their own little realities that I can escape into. I would be really interested to see what objects I would choose in ten years, and even a year from now just to see how much I've changed.

Converse Advertisement

Questions:
1. I chose to use a Converse shoe because I really like Converse and I think they're very stylistic and fun to wear. There are a lot of different styles and colours, which I think is cool because there are endless possibilities.
2. My 'big idea' was to take a simple shot of the shoe so that the product was simple and clear. With that, I wanted to create an interesting background to catch someone's eye. I think I achieved this by using the watercolour splatter for the background and a watercolour text of the product.
3. I used a muted rainbow color scheme for the background to bounce off of the neutral tones of the shoe. I used side lighting on the shoe to create a shadowed affect on the toe of the shoe.

Forced Perspective

Questions:
1. I think the third one is the most believable because it looks like she's hanging onto the pole to try and prevent herself from being carried away. I think the angle helps make this shot seem believable.
2. I think the last one is the most interesting because there's a story behind it. A giant is giving me a piece of their cookie. I think this is the most interesting because it is very creative and a bit more out of the box than the other ones are.
3. I think one of the most difficult things was making the perspectives work to tell the story we wanted it to. I think it was also hard coming up with creative ideas that we didn't see in class in the examples.

Combining Text and Image

going away means forgetting..."

iPhone Still Life

Questions:
1. My still life represents freedom and the ability that an airplane has in the air. They're free and above everything. They're able to see everything from a different perspective.
2. With my DSLR shots, I used direct lighting to achieve a glow on parts of the plane. With my iPhone shot, I used diffused lighting to get a more shadowed and dark shot.
3. I think with my iPhone shot, I could've created a better background for my shot to develop a sense of completeness in the image.

Photoshop Motion

Questions:
1. I think my favourite part of this image is the fact that it tells a story and it creates a series of motion without it being too obvious of what is going on step-by-step.
2. I think the most difficult part of this process was finding photos that didn't obstruct other photos to the point of confusion. I had to go through a lot of photos to find some that fit well within each other.
3. I think the easiest part of this process was using the layer mask and brush to blend the photos together. I think the auto-align helped with this process, making it a lot easier to do.

Green Screen

Original

Photoshopped

Questions:
1. I think the most difficult part of this project was trying to position the person to match the background, so the image appeared real.
2. I like how my image looks like a real event. I feel like this picture could've actually have been taken and I really like the sense of realness in it even though it is photoshopped.
3. I think I could have better lit my person so that she looked the same as Big Ben. I also feel like I could've better positioned her so that the photo had a better sense of composition to it.

Surreal Photography

Questions:
1. I used layer masks and the blending menu most in this photograph.
2. I think the best part of this is the way the cheshire cat looks like it is sitting on the bench. I think I accomplished blending it into the photo best.
3. It was kind of difficult to find images that worked well together, but I think it was fairly easy to place the combined images together. It was hard to match the lighting and shadows of the images, though.
4. I think I could have come up with a better idea that would've made my photograph a bit better in looks. I think I could've found a better way to accomplish what I wanted to do.

Speed Challenge Quiz

Three Qualities I Like:
1. He creates a sense of whimsical nature in his photographs.
2. He makes me feel immersed in the image, instantly drawn in.
3. His images look pure, as if there is no human life around disrupting nature.

Questions:
1. The quality I like best about my shot is the fact that the image is purely nature, nothing else. The eye gets drawn to the tree and the building is somehow absent when I look at this image.
2. I think my shot is amazing because it captures the purity of nature, while still drawing in eyes around to search through the image.
3. I used the grid option on my phone to establish rule of thirds with the tree, along with minor lighting adjustments to help see details that were lost in the tree and grasses.
4. I liked this challenge because I was able to look at things differently. I looked at objects more as life forms than still life. I used this time to look at things in a way I hadn't before.
5. I used leading lines in this picture to enhance the trees natural shape. I positioned the angle so that the branches would fall out of the frame in a way that leads the eye around the photo. I also used rule of thirds to position the tree itself on one third of the photo.

Landscape in a Bottle

Questions:
1. I learned how to create clipping masks, how to create a water reflection, and how to create my own layer mask using the lasso and polygonal lasso tools.
2. There are 30 layers in my final file.
3. I did like this assignment because there was a lot of different techniques used, which helped me better learn how to use photoshop. With all these different techniques, I was able to create a really interesting image that I really liked creating. I think this was a cool assignment because we had creative freedom within the bottle to make it our own.

Original #4

Filter: Neon Glow

Original #5

Filter: Dry Brush

Questions:
1. My favourite image is the first image because I think the colours go together well and complement each other, creating a pleasant image to look at. I think the blurred green helps draw the eye into the main focus of the red petals. I think it's an interesting image to look at.
2. I think the third image shows the best elements of art because it has uniformity with the lines going down the image. I also think the colouring of the image helps with the entire composition of the image.
3. I used rule of thirds, along with perspective in my favourite image. I also put the focal point on a cross hair to draw the eye into the photo.
4. I think my favourite photo and filter combination is the fourth one. I like how the gray and green create an interesting feel. I think the glow is able to help create a focal point in an image that really didn't have one before. I think the glow also helps to bring out some detailing that gets lost in the original image.
